Subject Choices

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF FORMAL ASSESSMENT TASKS:

Grades 8 – 9:

 

A learner must offer and complete nine (9) subjects:

  • Two (2) official languages. One on Home Language level (English) and one on First Additional Language level (Afrikaans)
  • Mathematics
  • Natural Science
  • Life Orientation
  • Social Sciences
  • Technology
  • Arts and Culture
  • Economic Management Sciences

 

Grades 10 – 11:

 

Compulsory subjects:

Learners must have 4 compulsory subjects:

  • Two Languages – of which one is on Home Language level (English), and one on First Additional level (Afrikaans)
  • Mathematics / Mathematical Literacy
  • Life Orientation

Subject choices:

Learners may choose 3 of the following subjects:

  •      Physical Science
  •      Life Science
  •      CAT
  •      Economics
  •      Accounting (Gr12 only)
  •      Business Studies
  •      Geography

Grade 12:

In Grade 12 all subjects include an internal assessment component, which counts 25% of the final assessment mark. This excludes Life Orientation (LO) where the internal assessment component counts 100% of the final assessment mark.

The external assessment component for Grade 12 counts 75% of the final assessment. In certain subjects a practical assessment component may contribute 25% to the external component. Guidelines for the external examinations (Senior Certificate) are provided in Section 3 of the Subject Assessment Guidelines.

Grades 8 – 12:

The national codes together with either the descriptors or percentages will be used for recording learner performance.

PROMOTION REQUIREMENTS:

 

SENIOR PHASE: Grade 8 and 9

 

Achieve a level 4 (50 – 59%) in Home Language (English)
Achieve  a level 3 (40 – 49%) in the other language (Afr FAL)
Achieve  a level 3 (40 – 49%) in Mathematics
Achieve  a level 3 (40 – 49%) in any three (3) of the remaining subjects
Achieve a level 2 (30 – 39%) in any two (2) of the remaining subjects

 

FET:  Grade 10 – 12:

Obtain 40% in three (3) subjects, one (1) of which is an official language at Home Language level (English)
Obtain 30% in three (3) other subjects
